St. Kenneth pastor resumes parish duties after investigation

Plymouth — Fr. Thomas Belczak will resume his duties as pastor of St. Kenneth Parish in Plymouth after the FBI closed an inquiry into the parish’s finances, the Archdiocese of Detroit announced June 20.

Fr. Belczak will return to the parish effective June 27; he had been required by the archdiocese to step aside during the FBI’s investigation since October 2014.

The archdiocese has also appointed an on-site delegate to maintain administrative and financial oversight of the parish. Bishop Walter Hurley, retired bishop of Grand Rapids and a former Detroit auxiliary, will serve in that role.

Auxiliary Bishop Francis Reiss, vicar for the archdiocese’s South Region, told parishioners that while no further action has resulted from the FBI’s investigation, the archdiocese “has identified some concerns regarding St. Kenneth Parish’s administrative and financial practices.” Bishop Reiss described the decision to assign a delegate as part of a canonical process to speed Fr. Belczak’s return to the parish, with the priest’s agreement.

Bishop Reiss said he “deeply regretted” the difficulty of Fr. Belczak’s absence, “particularly because it put an understandable strain on the community.” He also thanked Fr. Richard Perfetto, Fr. Timothy Babcock and Fr. Robert Blondell, who had served the parish in the interim.

“It is my hope and expectation that you will be pleased by Fr. Tom’s return — and that it will bring about healing and deepen this parish community’s sense of unity in the Body of Christ,” he said.
