Sr. Virginia Mullins, formerly known as Sr. John Thomas Mullins, died March 30 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 91 and in the 72nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sr. Mullins was born in Detroit to John and Mary (Blake) Mullins. She graduated from St. Ambrose High School in Detroit and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Arts degree in English from John Carroll University in Cleveland.
Sister spent 35 years ministering in education in Illinois, Ohio, Iowa and Michigan. She was principal of St. William School in Walled Lake for six years (1962-68), and a writer for Central Service-Public Relations Office in Adrian (1975-78). She also taught at St. Patrick, Brighton (1952-53); St. Joseph, Maybee (1954-55); St. Alphonsus, Dearborn (1955-62); Aquinas High School, Southgate (1968-72); and Our Lady of Sorrows, Farmington (1972-74). Sister spent 11 years in pastoral ministry in Owosso and Imlay City, as well as in Kentucky. Sr. Mullins became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 1998.
Sr. Mullins is survived by a brother, Bernard Mullins of Stuart, Fla. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sr. Mary Mullins and Sr. Miriam Mullins, both Adrian Dominican Sisters.
The funeral liturgy for Sr. Mullins will be in St. Catherine Chapel on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221.
