Mercy Sr. Mary Josephine Koschatzk, formally known as Anna Koschatzki, died March 20 at McAuley Center in Farmington Hills. She was 96.
Sr. Koschatzk was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Adolph and Mary (Soehnel) Koschatzki. She was the fifth of seven children. She entered the Mercy Community in Grand Rapids, but completed her novitiate in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1931. She professed her final vows in 1935.
She earned a bachelor’s degree at Mercy College of Detroit and also studied at Notre Dame, University of Detroit Mercy and Michigan State University. Sr. Koschatzk taught in various cities of Michigan and Iowa, and served as Diversional Activities assistant at McAuley Center.
Sr. Koschatzk spent the next 83 years in the Mercy Community, serving in the ministries of education. Fifty-three of those years, she was a primary and elementary school teacher, and 43 of the years she taught in Catholic schools in a variety of Michigan cities.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
