Sr. Mary Elizabeth (Mary Bede) Kinney, IHM

16-Sr-KinneySr. Mary Elizabeth (Mary Bede) Kinney, IHM, 91, died Aug. 4 in the IHM Health Care Center.  Born on Feb. 24, 1924, Mary was one of 10 children of Ambrose and Marian (Maher) Kinney. She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1940. She completed high school at St. Mary Academy in Monroe. Sr. Kinney earned degrees from Marygrove College and the University of Detroit. For 28 years, she taught at St. Mary and St. John, Monroe; Our Lady of Help and St. Boniface, Detroit; Our Lady of Miracles, Gustine, Calif.; St. Mary, Mt. Clemens; and as teacher and principal of St. Timothy, Trenton. In 1968, Sr. Kinney entered congregational leadership as provincial of the Southeast Province and was elected general superior, serving from 1976-82. She was also coordinator of the Indiana Catholic Conference. In 1988, Sr. Kinney returned to Monroe, serving as director of St. Mary Center for Lifelong Learning until 1994. Sr. Kinney served overseas in Bethlehem, South Africa and the Kostad-Umtaka diocese. She returned to the United States in 1999, assisting in the IHM Archives. Sr. Kinney is survived by her brothers, Michael and John; sister, Margaret “Peggy;” and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Rita, Lucy, Mary Ann and Georgiann; and her brothers, Patrick and Gerald. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 7. Burial was to follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.
