Sr. Naughton
Sr. Mary Naughton, IHM, 92, died April 24, at IHM Senior Living Community, Monroe.
Mary was born in Detroit on Dec. 22, 1925, to John and Catherine (Murphy) Naughton. After entering the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe, she received the religious name Sr. Caritas.
Sr. Naughton earned degrees from Marygrove College and the University of Detroit, and ministered in education throughout Michigan, including in Detroit at St. Charles, St. Martin, St. Matthew, St. Rose, Blessed Sacrament and St. Edward; Holy Cross, Marine City; St. Anne, Warren; Sacred Heart, Roseville; St. Gertrude and St. Isaac Jogues, St. Clair Shores; and St. Phillip, Battle Creek.
In the mid-1970s, Sr. Ala transitioned to new ministries in parish life, communications and library sciences. After earning a master’s degree in library sciences from Wayne State University, she served as librarian at St. Clement High School, Centerline; St. Mary, Gaylord; Bishop Borgess High School, Redford; St. Scholastica Elementary, Detroit; and Our Lady of La Salette in Berkley. Sr. Ala also served her community in Monroe as librarian for 10 years in the IHM Congregational Library and Visitation House of Prayer.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 30 at the IHM Motherhouse, Monroe. Burial was to follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.
