Sr. Margaret Sullivan, IHM, 102, died June 2 in the IHM Senior Living Community, Monroe. She was celebrating her 85th jubilee in religious life.

Born March 1, 1916, in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, Margaret Sullivan joined the family of Michael and Catherine (Quilty) Sullivan, who moved to Detroit in 1927.

In her junior year of high school, she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Monroe, and received the religious name Sr. Malachy. Four of her sisters, and other aunts and cousins, also joined the IHM community.

Sr. Sullivan earned degrees from Marygrove College and the University of Detroit. Her teaching ministry spanned 35-plus years in elementary schools including St. Stephen, Port Huron; and St. Agnes, St. Francis de Sales, Gesu, St. Agnes, Our Lady of Good Counsel and Christ the King, all in Detroit; as well as Holy Name, Birmingham; St. Vincent, Pontiac; and Sacred Heart, Dearborn.

In the early 1970s, Sr. Sullivan transitioned into parish and pastoral ministry. She served the parishes of St. Mary of Redford, Detroit, and St. Thomas Aquinas, New Port Richey, Fla., for many years. In the 1980s, her ministry focused on educational administration and pastoral work with the elderly in Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 6 at the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe. Burial was to follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.
