Sr. Lucy Abbey, IHM

AbbeySr. Lucy Abbey, IHM, 68, died Jan. 27.

Sr. Abbey was born July 15, 1946, in New London, N.H., to Robert and Elizabeth (Meader) Abbey. She grew up in New London and Ardmore, Pa. In 1963, she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Immaculata, Pa. In 1988, she transferred to Monroe and recently celebrated her 50th jubilee.

Sr. Abbey earned degrees from Immaculata College and St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Pennsylvania and Marygrove College in Detroit.

Sr. Abbey taught elementary and high school in Pennsylvania before moving to Detroit. In Michigan, she spent several years as an advocate for social justice with Groundwork for a Just World and as a pastoral associate at St. Suzanne Church, Detroit. After earning her degree in social justice, Sr. Abbey ministered to adult students, immigrants and veterans in family literacy and English language through Southwest Solutions, Detroit. She was a community organizer at St. Christopher Parish, Detroit, until her health declined.

Mass of Christian Burial was Jan. 30 at the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe. Private burial was to be in St. Mary Cemetery.
