Sr. Josephine Karas, IHM, 93, died Jan. 30 in the IHM Health Care Center, Monroe.
Sr. Karas was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Long Rapids, Mich., one of five children to Edward and Clara (Krenz) Karas. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1940.
Earning degrees from Marygrove College and University of Detroit, she ministered in education for 32 years in Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota and California. In Michigan, she served at St. Gregory, St. Raymond, St. Patrick and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Detroit; St. John, Jackson; Our Lady of Lake Huron, Harbor Beach; and Catholic Central High School, Battle Creek; and later served in religious education and pastoral ministry at St. Mary, Marshall. She returned to the IHM Motherhouse in 2004.
Sr. Karas is survived by nieces and nephews and was predeceased by her brothers, Francis and Ivan Karas, and her sisters, Bernice Griffin and Sr. Vivian (Clare Edward) Karas, IHM.
Mass of the Resurrection was to be Feb. 4 at the IHM Motherhouse.
