Sr. Jean Charles Birney, OP, formerly Elizabeth Ann Birney, died Aug. 3 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 94 and in her 76th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Birney was born in Jackson to Charles and Jean (Crawford) Birney. She earned degrees from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and Loyola University in Chicago.

Sr. Birney spent 39 years ministering in education in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Florida. For 12 years in Michigan, she taught at St. Theresa, Detroit (1942-44); St. Dominic, Detroit (1944-48); St. Alphonsus, Dearborn (1958-62); and St. Ambrose High School in Detroit (1962-63).

A funeral Mass was offered in St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian on Aug. 7. Rite of Committal was to be in the Congregation cemetery.
