Sr. Betty Jenkins, OP, formerly Sr. Mary Mathia Jenkins, died May 25 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 86 and in her 68th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sr. Jenkins was born in Detroit to Maurice and Lois (Peters) Jenkins. She earned degrees from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and the University of Detroit (Detroit-Mercy). She held certificates in religious studies from Siena Heights and in pastoral ministry from SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake, and was a licensed certified social worker in the state of Michigan.
Sr. Jenkins ministered in elementary and secondary education for 22 years in Michigan, including at St. Thomas Aquinas, East Lansing (1951-52); St. Stephen, Saginaw (1952-57); and Precious Blood (1957-62), St. Suzanne (1962-63) and Benedictine High School (1963-73), all in Detroit. She also serve 13 years as pastoral minister at St. Michael Parish, Grand Ledge (1973-86). Sr. Jenkins ministered for 7½ years in the Activities Department at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian (1988-95), and worked at the Siena Literacy Center in Detroit in marketing/publicity, and as a hospitality coordinator (1998-2009).
Funeral Mass was offered in St. Catherine Chapel in Adrian on June 5. Rite of Committal was to be in the Congregation cemetery.
