Sr. Anne Cooke, CSJ



Sr. Anne Cooke, CSJ, (Sr. Vincent Marie) entered into eternal life Jan. 18.

Anne was born in Wiggin, Lancashire, England, on July 3, 1917, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (McEvoy) Cooke. She was a member of St. Benedict Parish in Highland Park at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on June 16, 1934.

Sr. Anne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Nazareth College and a Master of Arts degree in religious studies from Catholic University of America. She received certification in pastoral ministry from Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit. She taught at St. Francis Xavier in Ecorse, St. Augustine in Kalamazoo, Pontiac Catholic High School in Pontiac, Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights and St. Benedict High School in Highland Park. She was principal at St. Joseph School in Watervliet and St. Therese School in Lansing. In the 1960s, Sr. Anne moved into religious education and pastoral ministry at St. Timothy Parish in Trenton, St. Casimir Parish in Lansing, and SS. Peter and Paul in Washington Township. Sr. Anne shared her enthusiasm and interest in the field of education by involving herself in teacher formation and in-service workshops. She wrote articles for Religion Teacher Journal and High Time magazines and authored the book “Lifelines for Religion Teachers.” In 1997, she returned to Nazareth Center in Kalamazoo to serve her religious sisters as a pastoral care minister.

The funeral Mass and burial were Jan. 22 at Nazareth Center in Kalamazoo.
