DETROIT — Let’s take a ride down 2021-22 Championship Boulevard.
Looking in the rearview mirror, we see five Catholic League schools have already won seven state championships.
Warren De La Salle won football and basketball. Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood also has a pair in boys tennis and Division 3 girls golf.
Novi Detroit Catholic Central and Bloomfield Hills Marian were repeat winners in hockey and volleyball, respectively. Dearborn Divine Child won the Division 2 girls golf title.
Looking ahead, six CHSL schools are defending champs this spring.
One that has caused the most buzz is Orchard Lake St. Mary’s baseball team, ranked No. 1 in the country and No. 1 in the state.
The Eaglets have won Division 2 two times in a row but have moved up to Division 1. They have a 37-0 record, including a 9-3 decision last Saturday over the No. 2 team in Division 1, Grand Blanc.
St. Mary’s will begin state tournament action at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, against either Auburn Hills Avondale or Bloomfield Hills. The game will be played at West Bloomfield High School.
Grosse Pointe University Liggett will begin the defense of its Division 3 title at 11:30 a.m. the same day on its own diamond against Detroit Edison.
Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice has won Division 1 boys lacrosse the last two finals and 15 times in the last 16 years. The Warriors play Birmingham Seaholm at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, on Seaholm’s turf.
In the morning of the same day, Brother Rice’s defending Division 2 golfers will tee off at the Huron Meadows Golf Course.
Bloomfield Hills Marian, which has captured the Division 2 girls soccer title the last four years, will meet Madison Heights Lamphere on Tuesday, May 31.
Bloomfield Hills Academy of Sacred Heart, defending Division 4 champ, will play in the state finals this weekend, Friday-Saturday, June 3-4.
A word of caution: Even on our imaginary road, watch out for potholes. You’re in Michigan.
