DETROIT — Sacred Heart Major Seminary will soon be expanding its campus on Linwood Avenue and Chicago Boulevard in Detroit, the seminary announced May 10.

The seminary is in the final stages of an agreement with the city of Detroit to purchase four lots totaling 2.5 acres to the west of its campus on the border of Detroit’s historic Boston-Edison district. The purchase, made possible by the contribution of an anonymous donor, will enable the seminary to expand its parking and plan future upgrades, said Msgr. Todd Lajiness, Sacred Heart’s rector-president.

“The acquisition of the property demonstrates our long-term commitment to the city of Detroit and the neighborhood,” Msgr. Lajiness said in a statement. “It manifests our commitment to being a good neighbor and to the revitalization of the neighborhood by enhancing its beauty and its historic charm.”

Sacred Heart, a premiere Catholic educational institution in the United States that trains priests and laypeople for ministry, will clear the land of an abandoned building and landscape, secure and integrate the property into its present 40-acre campus.

The land purchase is expected to be made final within weeks, and the demolition of a vacant building on the property, as well as landscaping and the installation of parking spaces, should be completed by this summer.

“Importantly, the acquisition also will have a positive impact in how we pursue our mission, giving us the necessary space to increase parking, enhance our green space, and allow our programs to flourish,” Msgr. Lajiness said.

Founded in 1919, Sacred Heart attracts students from the Archdiocese of Detroit as well as national and international dioceses. The seminary currently has 113 men in residence studying for the priesthood, and 357 lay students.
