DETROIT — Early Feb. 11, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Detroit received word from the Vatican that Pope Francis had accepted the resignation of Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron and appointed Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger of Tucson, Arizona, as the the next archbishop of Detroit.
From start to finish, Archbishop-elect Weisenburger had a full day of introduction to his new archdiocese, beginning with a trip to Sacred Heart Major Seminary, where he was greeted by seminarians and spent time praying in the chapel in preparation for the introductory press conference that followed in Sacred Heart’s Cardinal Mooney Parlor.
While addressing the media, Archbishop-elect Weisenburger joked about the cold Michigan winter, but noted “it has been a very, very warm welcome from the hearts of those who’ve greeted me.”
Archbishop-elect Weisenburger spent the remainder of his day meeting with his coworkers in Christ; he greeted his brother priests from across the archdiocese during a Zoom call, and, in the afternoon, he toured the archdiocesan Chancery building in downtown Detroit, where he was warmly welcomed by members of the curia.
The archbishop-elect ended his long day with a visit to the mother church of Detroit, the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, where he was led on a tour by the cathedral's rector, Fr. J.J. Mech.
"I have been doing my best now for 37 years to say 'yes,' and it's been a wonderful journey thus far, and I think it will be a wonderful journey ahead," Archbishop-elect Weisenburger said of Detroit. "This is home, and I am blessed to be here."
