DETROIT — After prayerfully discerning with their sponsors, families, OCIA directors and formators, 793 individuals took the next step toward their full commitment to the Catholic Church the weekend of Feb. 17-18.
The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament was filled several times over during the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion as 360 catechumens and 433 candidates pledged their intention to continue toward the Easter vigil, when they will be welcomed into the sacraments of initiation.
Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron presided over Sunday's liturgy — the third of three — and asked the catechumens and candidates to publicly declare their intentions to join Christ's church. Catechumens are those who have never been baptized, while candidates are those who have been baptized, either in a Catholic or Protestant church, but have not been confirmed or received first holy Communion.
Archbishop Vigneron also thanked the catechists, sponsors and OCIA directors and volunteers for their efforts to form and educate this year's candidates and catechumens.
