New Mass setting to honor black Catholic heritage

Detroit — A new Mass setting honoring the contributions of black Catholics to the Church and kicking off Black History Month will debut Jan. 28 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

The Mass setting composed by longtime Detroit music minister and Gospel musician Keir Ward, called “Mass of the Sacred Heart,” will be used during a Gospel Mass for Peace at the cathedral starting at 4 p.m. The Mass will also pray for an end to violence.

Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron commissioned Ward to write the Mass setting “as a gift from the black Catholic community to the entire Church,” according to an event invitation from the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The setting will be performed by the Black Catholic Ministries Gospel Choir and the Archdiocesan Chorus of Detroit.
