DETROIT — As 34 priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit celebrate milestone jubilees of their ordination in 2024, the priestly class of 1999 gathered last month for a reunion, sharing memories, smiles and blessings.

Seven priests and two bishops celebrating their 25th anniversary of ordination gathered May 16 for a special Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, followed by a reception at the archbishop's residence.

The class members included Frs. Paul Ballien, Brian Cokonougher, Jeffrey Day, Timothy Laboe, Richard Treml, Kurt Apfelbeck and Robert Copeland as well as Gary, Ind. Bishop Robert J. McClory and Salina, Kan. Bishop Gerald L. Vincke. Fr. Robert Shafer, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, was not in attendance but is also a member of the class. Fr. Apfelbeck is a priest of the Diocese of La Crosse, and Fr. Copeland is a priest of the Diocese of Lansing.

The Detroit priests, including Bishop McClory, were ordained for the Archdiocese of Detroit on May 22, 1999, by Cardinal Adam J. Maida at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Read more about them and the rest of this year's jubilarians here.
