After an early academic start in San Antonio, Texas with the Ursuline Sisters and public schools, she attended St. Michael, Flint, Mich. for junior high and high school. High school continued with graduation from St. Mary Academy, Monroe. Joyce studied and earned a bachelor’s degree at Marygrove College and later a master’s in Education at the University of Detroit.

Sr. Joy was a well-rounded person -- having lived, traveled and experienced many people and places in the United States and Canada, pursuing education and pastoral ministry in study and practice. She worked as a professional teacher prior to entering the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1967.

After a few years of teaching history and religion at Bishop Gallagher High School, Harper Woods, she found her niche in higher education campus ministry. Upon her hiring at Macomb County Community College in 1972 and the Archdiocese of Detroit, she embarked on a thirty-year plus career as campus minister and then as Director of Campus Ministry. In the 1980s, she completed certification in Spiritual Direction, further enriching the outreach of her position. In 2005, she moved to part-time capacity in programming Student Activities. She truly enjoyed serving God’s people at the College and in the many groups, causes and committees to which she was committed. After formal retirement, she continued her involvement with special causes.

A longtime resident of St. Clair Shores, her home was often a hospitality site for hosting community members. Sr. Joy recently came to the Motherhouse for recuperation, fully intending to return to her apartment and friends in St. Clair Shores.

Sister Joyce was preceded in death by her parents.
