Sr. John Norton Barrett, OP, baptized Catherine Barrett, died on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 98 years of age and in the 74th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Edward and Mary Ann (Norton) Barrett. She graduated from St. Catherine High School in Detroit, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and earned a Master of Science degree in Education from Barry College (University) in Miami, Florida.
Sister John Norton ministered in elementary and secondary education for almost 68 years in Adrian, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; and Jacksonville, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This includes serving 50 years at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and coordinator of special events. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2016.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, John Norton, Edward, Allan, James, Robert, and Ralph. She is survived by loving family members and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Visitation will be held from 6:30-7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 pm Tuesday, February 14, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 am Wednesday, February 15, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
