May They Rest in Peace: Sr. Gloria Korhonen, OP

Sr. Gloria Korhonen, OP, formerly known as Sr. Jonathan Korhonen, died on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 95 years of age and in the 62nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Gloria was born in Astoria, Oregon, to Arvo and Maemi (Matson) Korhonen. She graduated from Baraga Township High School in Baraga, Michigan, and received a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a Master of Education degree in Special Education from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She also held certificates in Applied Music, Music Education, English and Music Theory.

Sister spent eight and a half years ministering in elementary and high school education in Farmington, Adrian, and Port Huron, Michigan. She then began 47 years of service to St. Joseph Church in Port Huron as its music director. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2018.

Sister Gloria composed many works for her parish and for the Congregation and was a published composer. She was honored for her contributions to the city of Port Huron with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Ruth Anttila and Muriel Lawrence. She is survived by a sister, Elaine Germaine, other loving family, and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Visitation will be from 6:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2024, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2024. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
