Sr. Eileen Meyers, OP, formerly known as Sr. Margaret Aloysius, died on June 1, 2023, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 92 years of age and in the 75th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister was born in St. Clair, Michigan, to Herbert and Mabel (Distelrath) Meyers. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in History from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, and earned a Master of Arts degree in History from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois.
Sister Eileen spent 30 years ministering in education in Detroit, St. Clair Shores, and East Detroit (Eastpointe), Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; West Palm Beach, Florida; and Van Wert and New Bavaria, Ohio. This includes seven years as principal at St. Basil School in East Detroit, and two years as assistant principal at St. Margaret School in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. She was a pastoral minister for 14 years in Grosse Pointe Farms and St. Clair, Michigan, and spent 12 years in various office ministries for the Adrian Dominican Sisters at the Motherhouse.
Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in 2005 but continued to volunteer her services in Congregation offices and in other areas where she saw a need. This included spending six months in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2006-2007, assisting in areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Edward, Donald, Bernard, Kenneth, Robert, Marie Klemmer and Marilyn Wyllie. She is survived by two sisters: Loretta Fraley of China, Michigan, and Dorothy Burgess of Naples, Florida.
A Memorial Mass was to be offered in St. Catherine Chapel. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Marry Funeral Home, Adrian.
