Sr. Catherine Ahern, OP, formerly known as Sister Jane Patrice Ahern, died on Friday, June 2, 2023, at her home in LaGrange, Illinois. She was 93 years of age and in the 71st year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Catherine was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Patrick Joseph and Jane Eileen (Condon) Ahern. She graduated from Mercy High School in Chicago and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Home Economics degree in Home Economics from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan.
Sister Catherine spent 22 years ministering in education in Homewood, St. Charles and Wilmette, Illinois; Detroit, Dearborn, and Lansing, Michigan; and Santa Cruz, California. She was a teacher and counselor at the Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago for 29 years.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers: Marie Ahern, Leona Moss, Reverend John Ahern, Patrick Ahern, and Gerald Ahern. She is survived by a brother, Eugene of Rolling Meadows, Illinois; a sister, Jane Cantieri of Mount Prospect, Illinois; other loving family and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Visitation will be held from 6:30-7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in the Gathering Space of St. Catherine Chapel. The Vigil Prayer will be held at 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 14, 2023, in St. Catherine Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 am Thursday, June 15, 2023. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Congregation Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221.
