Sr. Andrea Broutin, OP, formerly known as Sr. Joseph Helen Broutin, died on Friday, November 30, 2018, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 86 years of age and in the 68th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Andrea was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Andre and Helena (De Munter) Broutin. She graduated from Denby High School in Detroit, Michigan; received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in History from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Michigan; and earned a Master of Arts degree in History from De Paul University in Chicago, Illinois.
Sister spent 9½ years ministering in elementary education in Chicago and Homewood, Illinois; and five years in secondary education in Cleveland, Ohio, where she taught at Hoban Dominican High School, an Adrian Dominican sponsored institution. She spent 29 years in secondary and higher education in Detroit, Southgate, Monroe, and Adrian, Michigan, which includes a year at Dominican High School in Detroit, and a year at Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, both Congregation sponsored institutions. In addition, Sister served the Adrian Dominican Congregation for a year as Director of Formation, and was the transportation coordinator for one year in Adrian. She spent 2½ years in Detroit where she was manager of the Dominican High Convent building. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan, in 2010.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John. She is survived by a loving niece and nephew and her Adrian Dominican Sisters.
Welcome of Sister Andrea will be on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dominican Life Center Lobby; the Wake will follow from 6:15 to 7:00 p.m. in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center. The Reception of the Body and Vigil Prayer will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. The Rite of Committal will be in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221.
