Fr. Joseph Maloney, OFM Cap., died on Feb. 14 at the age of 88. Born on Jan. 29, 1931, he was the son of the late Dr. John and Virginia Maloney. He was invested as a Capuchin in 1951, perpetually professed in 1955 and ordained a priest in 1958.

From 1960-70, he taught at the provincial “brothers’ school” in Crown Point, Ind., and Mt. Calvary, Wis., and briefly was on staff at St. Lawrence Seminary (1970-71). He ministered in Warren, Mich., as a hospital chaplain (1971-78), and served as spiritual assistant the Secular Franciscans (Third Order) in Detroit from 1978-81. From 1984-90, he ministered as a chaplain at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He was on the pastoral staff at St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Hazel Park from 1990-91, and was on an evangelization ministry team in Racine, Wis., from 1991-93. Fr. Maloney served at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit as a confessor from 1993-2012, at which point he retired from ministry.

He is survived by his beloved twin brother James (Dorothy) of Clarkston, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he is also predeceased by his sister, Mary Ronayne, his brother Fr. Malcolm (Patrick).

Visitation will be on Friday from 3-8 p.m. with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. at St. Bonaventure Monastery Chapel, 1740 Mt. Elliott, Detroit. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in the Monastery cemetery.
