Deacon Rafael Jimenez passed on from this life on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2021, at the age of 85.
Deacon Jimenez was born Oct. 24, 1936, and ordained a permanent deacon on Jan. 19, 1974. Deacon Jimenez served as a deacon at Holy Redeemer, Detroit; Mary, Mother of the Church Hispanic Mission, Detroit; St. Stephen/Mary, Mother of the Church, Detroit; St. Hedwig, Detroit; and St. Francis d’Assisi/St. Hedwig, Detroit.
On an archdiocesan level, Deacon Jimenez served some time as associate for formation for Hispanic ministry. On a national level, he served some time on the board of the National Conference of Hispanic Deacons. Beginning in 1977, he and his wife, Margarita, spent a couple of years as missionaries in the Dominican Republic.
Visitation for Deacon Jimenez will take place on Monday, Nov. 1 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Professional Mortuary Services, located at 3833 Livernois Avenue, Detroit, 48210. His funeral Mass will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m., at St. Hedwig, 3245 Junction Street, Detroit, 48210. In-state will begin at 9:00 a.m., prior to the funeral Mass.
