BLOOMFIELD HILLS – It was a clash of the Catholic High School League girls soccer champions: Bishop Trophy winner Bloomfield Hills Marian versus Cardinal Trophy winner Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood.

The stakes were higher last Thursday, June 1, than a couple of weeks ago when they captured league honors. This was a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 district playoff game on Cranbrook’s field with the winner advancing to the regional level and, hopefully, beyond to the ultimate prize, a state championship that will be decided on Saturday, June 10.

Marian led 1-0 early in the first half when freshman Lily Robinson redirected a corner

kick by senior Adri Kattoo past Cranes’ goalie Jordan Ritchie.

The Mustangs increased their margin to 2-0 six minutes into the second half. Freshman Bella Musachio converted a rebound of a ball that had been kicked by senior Caroline Flynn.

Marian dominated possession and determined the course of the game from start to finish.

“They played great,” second-year coach Reid Friedrichs enthused. “The energy, the effort was awesome. We had people sliding into different positions they’d never played before. The seniors are the reason why the program is great. They have seen it done before and they want it again.”

Marian has nine state championships in its history: in 2003-04, 2009-10, 2012, 2017-18-19-21.

All MHSAA regional girls soccer contests will be played on Tuesday, June 6.

In Division 2, Marian (15-1-2) will play Grosse Pointe North (6-7-7); Dearborn Divine Child (8-5-6) will play Trenton (14-2-2).

In Division 3, Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard (6-12-1) vs. Grosse Ile (14-2-4); Warren Regina (12-7-2) vs. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep (14-6-3).

In Division 4, Allen Park Cabrini (12-6) vs. Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett (18-2); Clarkston Everest Collegiate (4-7-1) vs. New Haven Merritt Academy (13-5-2).

The regional finals will be held June 8-9, the semi-finals June 14, and the finals June 17 at Michigan State University DeMartin Soccer Stadium.

Rice vs. Catholic Central in lacrosse finals?

In Division 1 on June 7, Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (18-2) vs. Clarkston (19-2). In the other semi-final, Novi Detroit Catholic Central (18-2) will play Hartland (20-2). If Rice and CC win, they would advance to the state final on June 10 at East Grand Rapids High School.

Eight CHSL golf teams will be in the hunt for a state championship Friday and Saturday, June 9-10.

In Division 1, defending champion Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Warren DeLaSalle, and University of Detroit Jesuit will tee off at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University in Allendale.

In Division 2, defending champion Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep will play at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.
