Katelyn Lesko, a sophomore at Wyandotte Roosevelt High School and member of St. Stephen Parish in New Boston, was the first-place winner for the high school competition. Her card featured a sleeping infant and was digitally painted using Autodesk Sketchbook. Lesko, a repeat winner, received a prize of $100, and 10 of the cards with her design. Second place in the high school division went to Sarah Hornbeck, a homeschool sophomore from Taylor and member of Faith Christian Church in Melvindale. She received 10 cards featuring her design.

The winner of the grades 5-8 competition was also last year’s winner: Maya Mehall, an eighth-grader from St. John Paul II School in Lincoln Park. Her entry showed a close up of the Holy Family of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus drawn with pencils and watercolor on paper. She was awarded $50 and 10 cards with her design. Second place went to Abraham Hornbeck, a homeschooled eighth-grader from Taylor for his digital painting of “Jesus is Life” Christmas ornaments. He received 10 Christmas cards with his design.

Sale of the Christmas cards supports the pro-life educational work of Upper Downriver Right to Life, serving communities and churches in Wyandotte, Southgate, Lincoln Park, Ecorse, River Rouge and part of southwest Detroit.
