DETROIT — In exultation, palm fronds waved triumphantly at the entrance of the king of Israel into Jerusalem April 10 during Palm Sunday liturgies across the Archdiocese of Detroit.
Less than an hour later, shouts of "Crucify him!" rang out in those same churches, a stark reminder of the somber change in tenor that accompanies the Catholic observance of Holy Week.
At parishes like St. Augustine and St. Monica on Detroit's east side, the faithful sang, knelt, prayed and contemplated in holy silence the mystery of Jesus' Passion, preparing for the Lord's trials later in the week. Msgr. Daniel Trapp led the congregation by blessing palms and explaining the significance of the Church's traditions.
