MAC edges CHSL in boys basketball challenge, 11-7, girls to play Dec. 7-8.

Boys basketball teams from the Catholic High School League faced off against the Macomb Area Conference this past weekend. The girls take on the MAC on Dec. 7-8. 

The boys had the first opportunity, now it’s the girls’ turn in the CHSL vs. MAC Challenge.

Some 19 games between the Catholic High School League and the Macomb Area Conference high school girls basketball squads will take place this weekend, Friday-Saturday, Dec. 7-8. The Saturday games will be held at the University of Detroit Mercy’s Calihan Hall.

The CHSL boys basketball teams could manage just seven victories in the 18-game challenge last weekend. In games played at Calihan Hall, the CHSL won three of the five contests.

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep overwhelmed Macomb Dakota, 73-30. The Eaglets led 39-18 at the half and opened the third quarter on an 18-2 run. Freshman Kareem Rozier netted a game-high 21 points and fed six assists. Junior guard and recent Wisconsin-commit Lorne Bowman poured in 18 points.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central handled Romeo, 67-41.

Detroit Loyola beat St. Clair Shores South Lake, 64-46. Cam Hudson led the Bulldogs with 12 points, six rebounds and five steals. Mark Mayberry chipped in 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

On the other side of the win-loss ledge, Warren De La Salle lost to Roseville, 59-42. Roseville outscored De La Salle 19-8 in the fourth quarter on the way to the victory. William Smythe led the Pilots with 12 points.

The pre-season No. 1 ranked Detroit U-D Jesuit fell against New Haven, 70-58. The Cubs had scored the last six points of the second quarter to trail 34-30 at halftime. Julian Dozier led U-D Jesuit with 16 points but left the game with an injury in the third quarter. Alil Stewart added 10 points. U-D Jesuit played the entire game without injured senior forward Jalen Thomas.            

 All the other games were played on CHSL home courts. The winners were:

Dearborn Divine Child 69, Grosse Pointe North 46 – Parker LePage scored 24 and Cam Urbanic added 15 in the Falcons’ season-opener.

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 37, Fraser 29 – Clark Doman had 10 points to lead the Cranes while Cam Gardner had seven points and Jordan Benson pulled down 14 rebounds and Alex Short 12.

Allen Park Cabrini 36, Center Line 23.

Ann Arbor Greenhills 72, Clawson 30.

Madison Heights Lamphere defeated Clarkston Everest Collegiate, 63-54. Trevor Meyers scored 20 for Everest.

Clinton Township Clintondale defeated Royal Oak Shrine, 62-50. Anthony Massucci scored 15 points and A. J. Massucci 12 for the Knights.

Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice lost a thriller, 60-59, to Warren Mott.The Warriors led by 20 points midway through the first half, but then managed just 14 in the second half, losing in the final eight seconds. Jon Brantley scored 24, including 20 in the first half, for Brother Rice.

Madison Heights Bishop Foley lost to crosstown rival, Madison Heights Madison, 72-67. Senior Sam Siepker had 18 points to lead the Ventures while senior Mike Maten had 12 and junior Jack Decker had 11.
