St. Mary CC’s ‘Teal Attack’ supports cancer-fighting coach, former principal (VIDEO)

MONROE — St. Mary Catholic Central High School in Monroe hosted its seventh annual “Teal Attack” volleyball game on Sept. 22 to raise money and awareness in the fight against ovarian cancer.

“Teal Attack” was created in 2015 after St. Mary Catholic Central volleyball coach Karen O’Brien was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, an homage to O’Brien’s role as a hitter, or “attacker” when she played in college and high school.

Seven years later, the defending state champion Kestrels are continuing the fight, led by O’Brien, and have raised more than $300,000 for cancer research. This year’s game, against Airport High School, also supported Ruth Meiring, a longtime local educator and current member of the St. Mary Catholic Central school board, who was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

The game raised nearly $20,000 for the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance.
