DETROIT — After the annual Catholic Schools Week Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 10 students were recognized as scholarship winners in Alliance Catholic Credit Union's fourth annual “Live it. Show it. Share it.” scholarship contest.

Students were asked to submit a meme — a popular image on the internet with accompanying text to convey humor — to show why they love Catholic schools and how Catholic schools inspire them to live their faith.

A total of 136 eligible entries from 36 Detroit-area schools entered the contest, among which 10 were selected to receive a minimum $1,000 scholarship.

Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron congratulates Cole Tite of Cardinal Mooney High School, one of two third-place winners of a $2,500 scholarship.

Audrey Schena, an eighth-grader at Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Grosse Pointe Woods, won a $1,000 scholarship for her meme depicting Oprah Winfrey with an excited look on her face with the accompanying text, “When I found out I got to pray and talk about God in school.”

“It’s really important for me that I get to learn and grow in my faith with other people who are also learning and growing in their faith,” Audrey told Detroit Catholic. “It’s really important because there are so many people who don’t know God. We can grow and share in our knowledge of how amazing our God is, to teach them and show them that God is great.

“I don’t know where I would be in my faith journey if I hadn’t gone to a Catholic school; it helps me grow so much and is so important to me.”
