ROCHESTER HILLS — Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood came within 11 points of winning its fourth girls state swimming championship last Saturday during the MHSAA Division 3 championship meet held at Oakland University’s Natatorium.

The Cranes’ 306 points trailed only East Grand Rapids’ 317. Cranbrook won the state crown in 2011, 2012 and 2017, and was runner-up on six other occasions.

Bloomfield Hills Marian came in third with 245 points. The Mustangs won it all in 2007, 2008 and 2014, and second place in 2016 and 2017.

Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was 15th with 53 points, Grosse Pointe University Liggett 28th with 16 points, and Madison Heights Bishop Foley’s three points placed 34th.

Cranbrook won five events, two of them record-setting performances by junior Justine Murdock. She won the 100-yard backstroke for the second year in a row in 54.53 seconds for a new Division 3 record, and the 200 individual medley in 2:05.62.

Murdock swam a leg on the Cranes' winning 400 freestyle relay team that set a championship meet record of 3:27.93. The others in the quartet were senior Jordan Murrell, junior Charlotte Trunsky and junior Gwenyth Woodbury.

Murrell, Trunsky and Woodbury along with junior Hale Oal made up Cranbrook’s winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Woodbury won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.07. She also won the race two years ago as a freshman.

Her second-place time of 55.63 in the 100 butterfly set a new championship meet record, besting the 55.67 by Rhianna Hensler of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep a year ago.

50 freestyle — 2nd, Trunsky, of Cranbrook, 24.04; 4th, Waechter, of Marian 24.15.

100 butterfly — 7th, Oal, of Cranbrook, 57.64; 8th, Sielicki of Marian, 58.31.

100 freestyle — 5th, Waechter, of Marian, 52.52.

500 freestyle — 4th, VanDyke, of Marian, 5:09.12.

200 freestyle relay — 5th, Marian 1:38.83 (sophomore Lilly Masters, Snyder, VanDyke, and Waechter).

100 backstroke — 3rd, Sielicki, of Marian, 57.23; 6th, sophomore Alina Stanczak, of Notre Dame Prep, 59.18.
