SOUTHFIELD — In an inspiring display of community service and spirit, the Council of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Detroit (CCW/AD) gathered March 16 at the Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan's adoption and foster care offices in Southfield to lovingly assemble dozens of Easter baskets, a project they proudly sponsored for Catholic Charities' foster care families.

In celebration of its 85th anniversary next month, Detroit's Council of Catholic Women continues its longstanding tradition of service and advocacy that began in 1939. For more than eight decades, it has been a resonant voice for women within the diocese, championing various causes and fostering a strong sense of community.

"This event is more than just packing Easter baskets; it's about bringing joy to families and children and showcasing the loving spirit of our community," said Sharon DiGiovanni, the current council president. "As we look toward our 85th anniversary, we are reminded of our rich history and the impactful legacy we aim to continue."

The council's dedication is evident in its enduring partnership with Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, with whom they have collaborated on several significant projects, including Operation Layette and mental health awareness initiatives.

To infuse new energy and ideas into their ranks, the Council of Catholic Women is actively reaching out to women in the diocese, encouraging them to answer the call to serve and become part of a vibrant tradition of faith-based community work.

"The joy and satisfaction of serving others are immeasurable, and we hope more young ladies will join us in this fulfilling journey," DiGiovanni said.

The Council of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Detroit, a part of the National Council of Catholic Women and the Detroit Province of councils, has shown that compassion and community spirit can significantly improve the lives of many.
