Detroit — The Catholic High School League has announced Dearborn Divine Child as its 2017-18 Catholic school of the year, and Amanda Coleman and Rosanne Acciaioli as its teachers of the year.
The league made the announcement at its year-end banquet, which was held June 4.
Divine Child was awarded the James Leary Award, named after the former athletic director of the University of Detroit Jesuit, after winning back-to-back Prep Bowl championships as well as league titles in boys lacrosse, boys and girls track, girls cross country, competitive cheer and pom. The school also was honored for its cooperative spirit, quality education and “impact on the community,” Catholic League director Vic Michaels said.
Coleman, a math teacher at Gesu School in Detroit since 2012, was awarded the Bishop John Quinn Elementary School Teacher of the Year Award for her innovative classroom work, including “STEM Fridays” and a focus on problem-solving and critical thinking, as well as coordinating monthly giving projects.
“Her enthusiasm is contagious and she is very dedicated to the Catholic faith in her teaching,” Michaels said.
Acciaioli, a teacher at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, was honored as the Bishop John Quinn Secondary School Teacher of the Year.
Acciaioli “is incredibly focused on helping students discover real-life meaning through her classes,” especially through grief and loss classes, Michaels said.
