A trio of new head coaches will be on the CHSL sidelines this winter.

At Novi Detroit Catholic Central: Coach Brandon Sinawi will only have to travel across town to take over as the new head basketball coach, only the fourth coach in the last 50 years to lead the Shamrocks’ program.

Sinawi had been the head coach at Novi High School since 2014. He led the Wildcats to three consecutive MHSAA district championships, a regional title, and a MHSAA Final Four appearance in 2018. He was recognized as the Detroit News and Free Press All-North Coach of the Year in 2018 and was runner-up for the 2018 BCAM Coach of the Year Award.

Sinawi teaches at Novi Middle School, and his wife, Suzanne, teaches for the Livonia Public Schools. They live with their twin boys, Jackson and Jude, in Livonia.

At Marine City Cardinal Mooney: Jerry Luzynski has moved up to varsity girls basketball coach. He had been JV coach and for the last two years assistant varsity coach.

Luzynski  brings more than 16 years of combined basketball experience to Mooney. He played in high school for Warren De La Salle Collegiate under Gary Buslepp and Greg Esler and continued his playing career at Adrian College.

At Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice: Rick Palmer is a 2002 graduate of Detroit Country Day, where he was a three-year letter winner, two-year starter and team captain in 2002. In 2006, he graduated from Albion College, where he was a four-year basketball letter winner, and served as a team captain for two seasons in 2005 and 2006. He captained the 2005 squad that reached the NCAA elite eight. He was inducted into the Albion College Hall of Fame in 2015.

Palmer began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Lakeland College (Wisconsin) in 2007. He spent one season at Bowling Green State University as the director of basketball operation before returning home to become an assistant coach at Detroit Country Day under coach Kurt Keener in 2009.

During his time at DCD, Palmer was an integral part of five MHSAA district and regional titles while winning two MHSAA state championships in 2010 and 2013.

Palmer resides in Bloomfield Hills with his wife, Megan, son Trey (4), and daughters Maggie (2) and Layla (1). Megan Palmer played volleyball at Albion College and was an assistant volleyball coach at Farmington Hills Mercy for three seasons.
