NOVI — Novi Detroit Catholic Central won its eighth CHSL Division 1 hockey championship, but the first since 2015, shutting out Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice 4-0 on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth.
The Shamrocks (4-3) avenged a 5-2 loss to Brother Rice three weeks ago, and at the same time, handed the Warriors (5-1-1) their first loss.
Catholic Central also blanked two teams on its way to the championship game — Dearborn Divine Child 9-0 and University of Detroit Jesuit 2-0.
Brother Rice gained entry to the finale by beating Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 3-1 and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 10-1.
The Shamrocks were led by seniors Dylan Dooley, two goals and one assist; Kyle Gaffney, one goal and one assist; and goalie Louis Finnegan making seven saves.
Cranbrook defeated Warren De La Salle 8-2 for third place. Riverview Gabriel Richard landed fourth by beating U-D Jesuit 5-2.
De La Salle finished in fifth place, U-D Jesuit sixth, St. Mary’s seventh and Divine Child eighth.
The AA Division champion will be decided Feb. 15 from among Madison Heights Bishop Foley, Allen Park Cabrini, Ann Arbor Richard/Greenhills, Royal Oak Shrine and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.
