SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The voices of the Cathedral Choir Academy of Detroit filled the Basilica of the Sacred Heart last week as they traveled on pilgrimage to South Bend, Ind.

While on the beautiful campus of the University of Notre Dame, the choir performed a short program and led the sung worship at the evening Mass, celebrating the Feast of Apostles, Saints Philip and James.

Thirty-five young singers, ranging in age from 10 to 18, participated in the pilgrimage. Touring the campus, particularly the beautiful basilica, and praying at the grotto, were highlights of the day.

Fr. J.J. Mech, rector of Detroit's Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, traveled with the choir to the Notre Dame campus and basilica.

“This is what we are all about, joyful missionary discipleship,” Fr. Mech said.

Susan Lindquist, founding director of the Cathedral Choir Academy, agreed, adding the pilgrimage had exceeded her expectations both spiritually and musically.

“Beauty lead us to God,” Lindquist said. “Children become what they see and hear. It is our task then, to provide the very best experiences possible.”

The Cathedral Choir Academy will conclude its season on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, June 2, singing the 11 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament with a Eucharistic procession following. Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will celebrate the Mass.

Founded in 2018, the Cathedral Choir Academy's mission is to provide an experience through which youth encounter Jesus Christ through sacred music, grow in faith and musicianship, and witness to the Word Incarnate. The program offers three levels of instruction and currently enrolls 45 choristers representing 26 parishes and schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit. The growing affiliate program now includes 18 area parish and school children’s choirs, offering resources and experiences beyond the parish level.

The Cathedral Choir Academy of Detroit will kick off the 2024-25 season on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Students of all faiths in grades three through 12 are welcome. For more information, call (313) 865-6300.
