Detroit — Capuchin Fr. John Celichowski has been re-elected as provincial minister of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph.
A member of the Franciscans International board, he entered the Capuchin order in 1987 and was ordained in 1993.
Besides Fr. Celichowski, newly elected council members include the following friars: provincial vicar Fr. Mark Joseph Costello, councilors Frs. Michael Sullivan, Gary Wegner, and Francis Voris.
More than 130 friars attended the four-day chapter, held every three years, to elect the Provincial Council, their governing body, and to discuss theological and social/justice issues.
The friars of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph live as a community of brothers, modeling themselves after St. Francis of Assisi. They serve in a variety of ministries, including social service, schools, chaplaincy, retreat houses and parishes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Arizona, California, Nicaragua, and Panama.
There are currently 180 friars serving in the province, which is headquartered at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit.
