Brother Rice maintains grip in boys tennis, wins CHSL Division 1 title

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice maintained its dominance of Catholic League boys tennis by winning the 2018 Division 1 championship for the seventh time in the last eight years, and for the 32nd time since 1971.

The Warriors scored 16 points in the meet held at the Franklin Racquet Club in Southfield, fending off a challenge from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood and Ann Arbor Greenhills, each tied for runner-up with 12 points.

Brother Rice is coached by Keith Cullen, a longtime tennis coach who has been in the area for many years. This is his first year back with the Brother Rice varsity team since he led them to state championships in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Rounding out the field were U-D Jesuit with 6 points, Novi Detroit Catholic Central, 5 points, and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, 3 points.

Cranbrook Kingswood, the defending CHSL champ, also won two flight championships: Joe Croskey, the No. 4 singles, and the duo of Geoffrey Qin and Isaiah Croskey, the No. 4 doubles.
