'Historically inspired' renovation includes new paintings, restored altar reminiscent of Blessed Solanus' day
DETROIT — With the finishing touches on a yearlong renovation of the chapel at St. Bonaventure Monastery complete, worshippers gathered in the sacred space where Blessed Solanus Casey once celebrated Mass to give glory and thanks to God for the blessing of the east-side Detroit chapel.
Auxiliary Bishop Donald F. Hanchon celebrated Mass at the newly renovated space, part of an overall $20 million restoration and expansion project at the Solanus Casey Center, on Feb. 3.
The renovation of the chapel was "historically inspired" and completed with touches reminiscent of the way it was when Blessed Solanus lived there.
Among the changes, the main wooden altar again hosts the Blessed Sacrament after a new sanctuary floor was installed, and hand-painted angels adorn the space surrounding the sanctuary.
Bishop Hanchon also blessed a new shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, fashioned by Joe Kach, with detailed paintings completed by Jeffrey Duchene and his daughter, Elisha.
St. Bonaventure Chapel is open each day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
