DETROIT — Funeral services for retired Detroit Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton are set for Saturday, April 13, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.
Bishop Gumbleton, 94, who was known for his tireless support of peace efforts around the globe and for his accompaniment of those beset by war, economic calamities and injustice, died April 4.
Visitation for Bishop Gumbleton will begin Wednesday, April 10, from 1-4 p.m. at the IHM Sisters Motherhouse, 610 West Elm Ave., Monroe, until a prayer service. Visitation will continue Thursday, April 11, from 2-8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1000 Eliot St., Detroit, and Friday, April 12, from noon to 8 p.m. at Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park.
Bishop Gumbleton will lie in state on Saturday, April 13, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of his funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Ave., Detroit. The Mass will be livestreamed on the cathedral's Facebook page.
Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
Memorial contributions be made in Bishop Gumbleton's honor to the Solanus Casey Center, St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, IHM Sisters, or Kay Lasante Clinic.
