Detroit — Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron is one of 10 candidates to become the next president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, according to an Oct. 21 news release from the USCCB.
The bishops are slated to elect the successor to New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan at their annual fall general assembly, Nov. 11-14 in Baltimore.
At the assembly, the bishops will select both a new president and vice president from among the 10 candidates. The current vice president is Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky.
Archbishop Vigneron is one of eight archbishops, a bishop and a cardinal nominated as candidates. The others are: Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond of New Orleans; Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap., of Philadelphia; Bishop Blase J. Cupich of Spokane, Wash.; Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston; Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles; Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky.; Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore; Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr of Cincinnati; and Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami.
The USCCB’s president and vice president are elected to three-year terms. According to by-laws, the bishops will first choose a president from among the 10 candidates, provided a simple majority vote is reached. The bishops will then choose a vice president from among the remaining nine candidates. If a simple majority is not reached on the first ballot, a second ballot is held. If still no majority is reached, the third ballot will be a run-off between the top two vote-getters.
The USCCB is also scheduled to elect a new chairman of its Committee on Catholic Education following the death of Bishop Joseph P. McFadden of Harrisburg, Pa., in May. The bishops also will vote for the chairmen-elect of five other committees and new board members of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc. (CLINIC) and Catholic Relief Services.
Bishop Leonard P. Blair of Toledo, Ohio, a former Detroit auxiliary bishop, is one of two candidates to chair the bishops’ Evangelization and Catechesis Committee.
Archbishop Vigneron is currently a member of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine and the conference’s Subcommittee on the Catechism.
