DETROIT — On Feb. 11, Pope Francis gave the Archdiocese of Detroit a new chief shepherd, appointing Tucson, Arizona's Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger as the sixth archbishop of Detroit.
Archbishop-designate Weisenburger, 64, will succeed retiring Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, 76, whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father.
Archbishop-designate Weisenburger was introduced to Detroit's faithful during a whirlwind day of greetings, including a press conference, visits with Detroit seminarians, a Zoom meeting with local priests, and tours of the archdiocesan Chancery building at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Archbishop-designate Weisenburger will be installed as archbishop of Detroit on March 18. Stay connected with Detroit Catholic and the Archdiocese of Detroit for continuing coverage in the days and weeks ahead.
