State and league championships on line this weekend

Catholic League teams will be in the hunt for a state championship and a league championship this weekend.

On Friday (Feb. 22), Novi Detroit Catholic Central grapples Clarkston at 2:15 p.m. in a Division 1 quarterfinal match. Should the Shamrocks prevail, they will meet either Westland John Glenn or Hartland at 9:45 a.m. Saturday in a semi-final bout.

The championship match is scheduled later at 3:45 p.m. Catholic Central is seeking its third straight wrestling title.

Dominant hardly describes the Shamrocks’ conquests in the district and regional levels of the state tournament, winning by scores of 84-0, 79-0, 84-0 and 80-0.

All the action is taking place at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.

Calihan Hall on the University of Detroit Mercy campus will be the scene Saturday (Feb. 23) for the CHSL girls basketball championship games.

At 1 p.m., Royal Oak Shrine will be trying to win its third straight Division C-D crown against Wixom St. Catherine of Siena, making its first appearance in the finals.  Shrine beat the Stars twice in regular-season encounters.

Ar 3 p.m., Bloomfield Hills Marian, the defending champ, will tip off against Dearborn Divine Child with the Division A-B title at stake. Marian trumped Divine Child twice during the season, the second time by only three points.
