CHSL athletics calendar comes to an end; state playoffs heat up

The Catholic High School League's 2018-2019 calendar comes to an end this week, while state playoffs kick into high gear. Here’s what’s on tap:

The CHSL winds down

Wednesday, May 22 — Boys and girls Division C-D track and field championship at Macomb Lutheran North. Detroit Loyola will be seeking its fifth consecutive title in the boys competition, while the Royal Oak Shrine girls will be trying for a third straight crown.

Friday, May 24 — The Catholic Baseball Showcase at Comerica Park. At 10 a.m., Riverview Gabriel Richard and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett will clash for the C-D title. The teams have split four games this spring.

At 12:30 p.m., the Division A-B trophy will be at stake when Novi Detroit Catholic Central and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep take the field. St. Mary’s won three of four games they played each other this season.

At 3 p.m., Gaylord St. Mary and Battle Creek St. Philip play, followed at 5 p.m. by Saginaw Nouvel versus Flint Powers Catholic.

State playoffs for spring season sports

Playoffs begin in earnest next week for baseball, boys golf, girls soccer, softball, girls tennis, and boys and girls track and field.

BOYS LACROSSE — On Wednesday, May 22, in a Division 1 regional at Birmingham Seaholm, Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice plays Grosse Pointe South at 5 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by Detroit U-D Jesuit against host Seaholm. The winners will play May 28.

GIRLS LACROSSE — In Division 2: On Wednesday, May 22, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood plays Royal Oak at Pontiac Notre Dame; Bloomfield Hills Sacred Heart Academy is at Davison; Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett hosts Rochester Adams, Bloomfield Hills Marian will host Detroit Country Day; and Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard is at Dexter.
