Sr. Florence Brotzge, SC, formerly Sr. Marcellus Brotzge, SC, died Saturday, Oct. 8, at Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, in Delhi Township, Ohio. She was 98.
She was born Florence Brotzge on June 17, 1913, in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of Gustave and Flora (Reh) Brotzge. She earned the Bachelor of Arts in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1947 and the master’s in curriculum from St. John’s Teachers College, Cleveland, Ohio in 1960.
Sr. Brotzge was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 79 years. She ministered in both elementary and secondary education, as well as in pastoral care, serving in Ohio, Illinois and Michigan.
Her long teaching service included St. Leo, Detroit (1934 – ’39 and 1944-48) and Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak (1963-67). Sr. Brotzge was a Lady of Charity in the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in Cincinnati. She retired to the St. Joseph Retirement Center in Sharonville (Cincinnati) in 1984. Sister returned to the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse in 1997 to serve in the Ministry of Prayer.
Many nieces and nephews, including her niece Sr. Donna Steffen, SC, survive her.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 11 in the chapel of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio. Burial was in the motherhouse cemetery.
