Cranes’ fears come true facing East Grand Rapids in Division 3 girls swim meet

Chris Bagley’s fears were realized in last weekend’s MHSAA Division 3 girls swim and dive championship meet at the Holland Aquatic Center.

When the MHSAA re-aligned schools on an enrollment basis, East Grand Rapids, the defending Division 2 champs, dropped to Division 3 – by one student!

The minimum number for the re-alignment for Division 2 is 999. East Grand Rapids' enrollment is 998.

Bagley’s talented squad from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood had high hopes of repeating as Division 3 champs. Those hopes were quashed when East Grand Rapids won with 330 points to the runner-up Cranes' 284.

Bloomfield Hills Marian, the runner-up a year ago, also was affected, winding up fourth with 160 points.

Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett finished in sixth place with 125 points.

Warren Regina ended up 33rd with three points, won by senior Sienna Sweet’s 14th place in diving.

Still, there were several noteworthy performances turned in by CHSL swimmers. Here’s a top three list:

200 yard freestyle medley – 1st place, Marian (junior Lauren Sielicki, freshman Mary Snyder, senior Anika Fassett, freshman Julia Waechter) in a record time of  1:46.71; 3rd place, Cranbrook Kingswood (sophomore Justine Murdock, sophomore Serena Hao, sophomore Hale Oal, senior Camille Misra).

200 yard freestyle – 1st, Liggett’s junior Sophie Housey in record time of 1:48.37; 2nd, CK sophomore Gwenyth Woodbury, who set the race record a year ago.

200 yard individual medley – 2nd, Liggett freshman Ginger McMahon.

100 yard freestyle – 1st Liggett junior Sophie Housey in a new Division 3 record of 50.23; 2nd Cranbrook Kingswood sophomore Gwenyth Woodbury.

200 yard freestyle relay – 2nd Cranbrook Kingswood (junior Jordan Murrell, senior Sydney Allison, sophomore Charlotte Trunsky, sophomore Gwenyth Woodbury).

100 yard backstroke – 1st CK sophomore Justine Murdock; 3rd  Marian junior Lauren Sielicki.

100 yard breaststroke – 1st Liggett freshman Ginger McMahon.

400 yard freestyle relay – 3rd Cranbrook Kingswood (junior Jordan Murrell, sophomore Charlotte Trunsky, sophomore Justine Murdock, sophomore Gwenyth Woodbury).

Former CHSL member Pontiac Notre Dame came in ninth with 112 points.

Junior Rhianna Hensler won the 100 yard butterfly.
