MADISON HEIGHTS — Bishop Foley is offering a different twist to summer sports camps.

“It’s something unique,” says athletic director Brian Hassler. “It’s the first if its kind for us, and maybe in the archdiocese among high schools.”

Titled “Faith and FUNdamentals,” the camp will be geared toward students in grades 3 through 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, July 15-18. Lunch will be provided. The cost is $125 per student.

“We will be teaching multiple sports including football, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, volleyball, soccer and floor hockey,” Hassler said. “We will also be incorporating a Catholic faith lesson every day relating to setting goals, sportsmanship, self-esteem, and servant leadership.”

Brian Barnes, a parishioner at Guardian Angels Parish in Clawson, will be directing the program. He is the Ventures' varsity football coach and a certified physical education teacher.

At the beginning of the Lenten season, he guides high school students in the SportsLeader Stations of the Cross Workout, a combination of exercises and praying the Stations.

“Cathletes,” members of Foley’s chapter of Catholic Athletes for Christ that Hassler moderates, will be on hand as counselors.
