May They Rest in Peace: Fr. Frederick Bodde

Fr. Frederick A. Bodde, 92, died May 19, 2019, in East China Township.

He was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Goodells, Michigan, the son of Albert and Ethelynn (Ohlert) Bodde. Fr. Bodde attended Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth Township. 

Following his ordination to the priesthood on June 6, 1953, under Cardinal Edward Mooney, he began his ministry as associate pastor of St. Valentine Parish in Redford, where he served until 1959. 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron on Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with visitation one hour prior.

After that, Fr. Bodde served as associate pastor of St. Jude Parish in Detroit (1959-63), St. Cecilia Parish in Detroit (1963-65), Epiphany Parish in Detroit (1965-68), and St. Thecla Parish in Clinton Township (1968-70).

Fr. Bodde was named to his first pastorate in 1970, and served 15 years as pastor of St. Barnabas Parish in Eastpointe. In 1985, he was named pastor of St. Stephen Parish in Port Huron, where he served the remainder of his active ministry before being granted senior status in 1997.

From 1986 to 1989, Fr. Bodde also served as vicar of the former Port Huron Vicariate. 

Following his retirement in January 1997, Fr. Bodde resided in East China Township and assisted in parishes in the River District area.

He is survived by his sister, Sr. Mary A. Bodde, SC, of Mount St. Joseph, Ohio, and brother, R. Francis Bodde of Kilmarnock, Virginia. He was preceded in death by a brother, John A. Bodde, and sister, Mary Agnes Griffor.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 23, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Young Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, China Township, and Friday, May 24, from 2-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Scripture service at Our Lady on the River Parish, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City. 

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church with visitation one hour prior. Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will be the celebrant. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Marine City.

Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
